PET Imaging of Microglia with [11C]PBR28 in Opioid Dependent and Healthy Control Subjects

This study aims to examine inflammation processes in the brain (neuroinflammatory and microglia markers). The proposed study will fill a major gap in our understanding of opioid addiction. The study entails a screening, mri, and PET scans. This study may also include an  inpatient or outpatient treatment with buprenorphine maintenance therapy for opioid dependent participants.

Trial Purpose and Description

We propose to use PET imaging with the radiotracer [11C]PBR28 to measure microglia levels in individuals with OUD (compared to healthy controls) and to explore relationships with measures of reward and neurocognitive function. This will improve our understanding of the neuroimmune mechanisms underlying OUD and its associated clinical correlates, and may guide the use of immunomodulatory medications (i.e., glial modulators) in the treatment of OUD. 

Eligibility Criteria


  • Able to provide voluntary, written, informed consent; 
  • Physically healthy by medical history, physical, neurological, EKG and laboratory examinations.
