Voice Prosthesis

Definition

A voice prosthesis is a medical device that is surgically implanted into a tracheostomy tube to restore speech in patients who have undergone a total laryngectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the larynx due to cancer or other medical conditions. The prosthesis allows air to flow from the lungs through the puncture and into the esophagus, enabling the patient to produce sound and speech.
