Trisomy 13

Definition

Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, is a rare genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra 13th chromosome. This chromosomal abnormality leads to severe intellectual disability and physical abnormalities in many parts of the body, including the heart, brain, and spinal cord. Affected individuals often have a cleft lip or palate, small or poorly developed eyes, and extra fingers or toes.
