Thin Basement Membrane Disease

Definition

Thin basement membrane disease (TBMD) is a genetic kidney disorder characterized by the thinning of the glomerular basement membrane, which is a vital part of the kidney's filtration system. This condition may lead to microscopic hematuria (blood in the urine) and, in some cases, mild proteinuria (protein in the urine). It is usually benign and rarely progresses to more severe kidney diseases.
