Postpartum Thyroiditis

Definition

Postpartum thyroiditis is an inflammatory condition of the thyroid gland that occurs in some women after giving birth. It is characterized by a period of hyperthyroidism, followed by hypothyroidism, and eventually a return to normal thyroid function. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune response triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy and postpartum.
