Furuncle (boil)

Definition

A furuncle, also known as a boil, is a skin infection that involves a hair follicle and the surrounding tissue. It is typically caused by bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus, which enter the skin through small cuts or abrasions. Furuncles are characterized by painful, red, and swollen bumps that may eventually fill with pus and rupture.
