Crigler-Najjar Syndrome

Definition

Crigler-Najjar syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the liver’s inability to properly process bilirubin, a waste product from the break down of red blood cells. As a result, levels of bilirubin in the blood increase, causing jaundice and potentially leading to serious complications such kernicterus, a form of brain or nerve damage.
