Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS)

Definition

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is a rare genetic disorder that affects sexual development in individuals. It is caused by a mutation in the androgen receptor gene, which affects how the body responds to androgens, or male sex hormones. People with AIS may have some or all of the physical characteristics of both sexes, including external genitalia, reproductive organs, and secondary sex characteristics.
