The ability to map the human genome has been a huge game-changer in cancer treatment. Cancer is caused by genetic mutations in our DNA. Using DNA sequencing technology, researchers and clinicians can now identify the DNA mutation driving a patient’s cancer; and try to target that specific mutation with a drug.
At Yale Medicine, a multidisciplinary team meets each week to formulate innovative, targeted treatment plans for cancer patients. Using the latest in sequencing technology, in combination with laboratory tests, they are able to recommend a plan that gives the patient the greatest chance of survival. They're delivering on the promise of personalized medicine.
