Biography

Urania Magriples, MD, a high-risk pregnancy specialist, seldom forgets a patient’s face and has enjoyed taking care of generations of women.

“I’ll walk in the room and say, ‘I know you. I know your mother.’ And you can’t get away with a lot when I know their mother,” Dr. Magriples says with a laugh, adding that she was always drawn to women’s health care. “From a young age, I knew I wanted to take care of women. I can identify and connect with them.”

While she tried to convince herself that the field of obstetrics and gynecology was not for her—due to working nights and weekends—she couldn’t resist it. “I just loved it,” she says of her specialty. “And high-risk obstetrics is a good balance for me because we take care of hypertension, diabetes and other medical issues, but we still do obstetrics. It’s a unique perspective because we have two patients, the mother and the child, to take care of.”

When it comes to helping patients through difficult situations, Dr. Magriples says being honest and reassuring are key. “I tell my patients, ‘Things maybe aren’t working out the way you planned, but we will find the best possible scenario for you and baby,’” she says. “Having a problem with your pregnancy can feel isolating, so I remind patients that it’s common and that we’ll get through it together.”

Passionate about global health, she spends several months each year in Rwanda training physicians. Dr. Magriples has been recognized for many years as a Top Doctor in the state in Connecticut Magazine. She is also a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine. She does not currently perform deliveries.
