Rama Kastury, DO
Rema Kastury, DO (doctor of osteopathy), is a medical geneticist who also is trained as an obstetrician-gynecologist, which gives her expertise in treating children with genetic conditions from before birth through adulthood.
“I can bridge the gap between obstetrics, genetics, and pediatrics, from when the mother is pregnant until after birth, handling all the genetics issues along the way,” Dr. Kastury explains.
She focuses on reproductive and prenatal genetics, as well as cancer genetics. She also is part of a multidisciplinary team that treats children born with ambiguous genitalia. “Many of the patients I treat have developmental delay, autism, neurofibromatosis, but the crux of my specialty is patients who are pregnant and something pops up in a blood test or ultrasound that shows a complicated genetics case,” she says. “I also work with patients going through fertility treatment, including preimplantation genetic testing.”
Dr. Kastury was doing her residency in Ob/Gyn when she decided to do a fellowship in medical genetics. “I have always been interested in women’s health. Now, women are getting pregnant later in life and our ability to do genetic testing has exploded. I went into genetics because of my interest in infertility and reproductive genetics,” she says.
Because she often has to deliver unfortunate news to patients, Dr. Kastury says she likes to give as much of her time as she can. “I let patients know that I am there for them from beginning to end, if they have any questions. It’s complicated material and I try to educate them as much as possible,” she says. “When patients feel empowered with knowledge, it makes them feel better.”
