Biography

Nancy L. Stanwood, MD, MPH, is a gynecologist and a nationally-recognized advocate for women’s reproductive rights. She is chief of Yale Medicine’s Family Planning.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Stanwood believes strongly in providing women with information concerning all of their options related to pregnancy. “We have to respect a patient’s autonomy, respect them as their own moral agent, by giving them thorough counseling and education, letting them know what their choices and options are, and then supporting and respecting their decision, whatever it is,” she says.

Family Planning provides compassionate and evidence-based care for women and their partners as they consider pregnancy, birth control and unplanned pregnancies. Dr. Stanwood is an associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine, and an associate clinical professor at Yale School of Nursing. Her research interests include the under-use of intrauterine devices and the prevention of teen pregnancies. She serves on the Board of Physicians for Reproductive Health, a national organization dedicated to sound science in reproductive health policy.
