Biography

Amir Masoud, MD, is a board certified gastroenterologist who specializes in gastrointestinal motility disorders—a variety of conditions that affect the digestive tract.

Dr. Masoud treats patients with a wide range of ailments including gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), gastroparesis (delayed emptying of the stomach) and functional bowel disease. Functional bowel disease includes disorders in which patients have chronic abdominal complaints without any physical abnormalities to explain their symptoms.

Dr. Masoud describes digestive diseases as “quality of life” issues: “If you can’t swallow or go to the bathroom, that really affects your day-to-day.”  For most patients, these conditions can be reversed or significantly improved with the correct interventions. “Seeing a patient enjoy their favorite meal for the first time in a long while, sometimes years, is a reward in and of itself,” he adds.

When it comes to helping patients with motility problems, Dr. Masoud says he enjoys the diagnostic challenge that these gastrointestinal disorders often pose. “Motility involves a lot of physics and, typically, you see the patient’s complaints fit with the pathology of the disease and clearly explain their symptoms” he says. “You don’t get that often in medicine.”

Dr. Masoud is an assistant professor of internal medicine (digestive diseases) at Yale University’s School of Medicine.
