International Medicine Program Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where is the Yale Medicine International Medicine Program located?

Yale University, Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital are all located within a walkable area in New Haven, Connecticut, on the northeast coast of the United States. They are approximately 50 miles from Bradley International Airport (Hartford, CT) and 78 miles from John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York City).

Q. Does the International Medicine Program provide interpreters or will I have an assigned interpreter for my entire stay?

Clinical interpreters are available at the hospital to assist as necessary. A dedicated clinical interpreter can also be arranged to be available for the entire duration of the patient’s stay, for an additional cost, which will be included in your financial package. For families requiring a non-clinical interpreter to provide assistance outside of the clinical setting, this service can be arranged through a third-party vendor, ProTravel, for an additional cost.

Q. Can patients refer themselves or is a physician referral required?

Patients can contact us directly. Find out how to become a patient. A physician referral is not required.

Q. Will the International Medicine Program assist with my travel arrangements and accommodations?

Patients who are accepted into the International Medicine Program can be connected, upon request, to ProTravel to assist with travel and accommodations. There is a nominal charge for this service, which will be based on an agreement set up between the patient and the vendor.

Q. Can family members stay near the hospital?

The Suites at Yale New Haven are within walking distance. Also, a van provides free transportation to and from the hospital. Call +001-203-654-7500.

Q. Does the International Medicine Program accept international medical insurance?

We accept insurance only from insurance companies with which we are contracted. Please contact the International Medicine Program Coordinator or your insurance company with questions.

Q. Who can answer financial and insurance questions?

The International Medicine Patient Coordinator will answer all your financial and insurance-related questions. Please complete the online Patient Information Request Form first.

Q. Can I choose the physician who will treat me?

Your International Medicine Care Coordinator will try to accommodate your request when possible.

Q. Should I contact the International Medicine Program if I’m only looking for a second opinion, not an appointment?

No, a request for a second opinion goes through a different process.

Q. Can the International Medicine Program assist with getting a medical acceptance letter so that I can obtain a medical visa?

Yes. Please complete the information request form so that we can better understand your clinical needs.

Q. I want to deliver my baby at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH). When should I travel to begin receiving prenatal care?

Yale New Haven Hospital does not accept international maternity cases. For pregnant women who are diagnosed with complications, please follow the instructions on Becoming a Patient.

Q. Does the International Medicine Program offer a payment plan or discounts on services?

Full payment is expected upfront before appointments will be scheduled.
