Tomer Avraham, MD, is a plastic surgeon whose focus is helping people who have had cancer surgery recover, both in appearance and in function. He specializes in all forms of breast reconstruction, including tissue- and implant-based techniques. All of these procedures are designed to help cancer survivors restore their sense of self as they cope with the aftermath of diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Avraham finds his work as a surgeon intellectually stimulating. He is especially interested in how he can use complex surgical techniques to achieve the most complete and natural solution to each patient's problems. Dr. Avraham has a particular interest in microsurgical techniques for using a woman’s own tissues for reconstructing her breast. These techniques include the DIEP flap, PAP flap and others.

He views his work as a reconstructive surgeon as an opportunity to help people cope with the difficult physical changes that often accompany their cancer treatment. “I am a partner in achieving their goals. I feel personally invested in my patients and their outcomes,” he says.

Dr. Avraham is an assistant professor of surgery (plastic and reconstructive) at Yale School of Medicine. In addition to his work as a clinician, he has an extensive research background, has published extensively in his field and often makes presentations at national meetings. “Innovation and progress are important to me. Research allows us to fine tune our approach and to figure out the best options in treating our patients,” says Dr. Avraham.
