Kevin Kim, MD, a Yale Medicine interventional oncologist and director of the Smilow Interventional Oncology Program, was only nine when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. "She fought hard, my family supported her and she lived for 13 amazing years,” says Dr. Kim. That experience inspired him to become a physician, specializing in cancer care.

Now he's a national leader in interventional oncology with over 150 peer-reviewed research articles focused on interventional oncology and immunotherapy. Dr. Kim has dedicated his career to providing minimally invasive treatment for advanced cancer patients. He uses targeted treatments that deliver cancer-fighting chemotherapy or radiation directly to tumors, using state-of-the art imaging guidance. The treatments Dr. Kim performs help shrink tumors or relieve pain in people with these cancers: lung, liver, kidney, skin, colon, melanoma, gynecological and breast. Not easily available elsewhere in Connecticut, these treatments are highly effective and are performed on an outpatient basis. 

As a professor of radiology and medicine (medical oncology) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Kim is training future doctors to use minimally invasive treatments to treat cancer. He is also the on the board of the newly-found Society of Interventional Oncology, and he conducts clinical trials and translational research through Yale Cancer Center.

 “I want to take care of patients as though I’m on the patients’ and loved ones’ side,” says Dr. Kim. “I’ve been there.”
