David E. Gutierrez, MD, specializes in both physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine, which means he treats pain, whether it is musculoskeletal, neurologic, or chronic pain that affects virtually any part of the body.

“I focus on decreasing pain and getting patients back to functioning normally, doing the things they want to be doing,” Dr. Gutierrez explains. “Chronic pain is real. Through research, we know there are actual neurological and biomechanical changes in the body of someone with pain. I am adamant about educating both the community and our patients about chronic pain.”

Dr. Gutierrez has expertise in neuromodulation, which is an umbrella term used in pain medicine to describe stimulation or direct administration of treatment to the body’s nervous system or other areas where pain occurs. For example, Dr. Gutierrez utilizes spinal cord stimulators as a form of treatment, which are implantable devices that can provide significant pain relief for the right patient. His research focuses on regenerative medicine, which is the practice of using a patient’s viable cells to replace, regenerate, or reengineer their cell processes and tissues that have been previously injured or damaged.

“As an interventional pain physician, I’m able to provide minimally invasive treatments for addressing chronic pain issues like neck or back pain, as well as other chronic musculoskeletal disorders,” Dr. Gutierrez says. “I like the continuity of care I can offer my patients, where I can always review what the patient has already tried and also provide new treatment strategies and recommendations.”

Dr. Gutierrez is an assistant professor of clinical orthopedics and rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine.
