Biography

Darren Volpe, MD, is a neurologist who treats patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

“I value the opportunity to help patients and their families understand how a brain disorder can cause cognitive and behavioral changes in a person,” Dr. Volpe says.

Among the types of dementia he treats are frontotemporal, Lewy body, and multi-infarct dementia (caused by multiple strokes). All of these disorders can cause a patient to lose a sense of self, he says. “I’m fascinated by how the brain is involved in our emotions, personality, and in forming a running autobiography of our lives through memories,” Dr. Volpe says.

After diagnosing a condition, Dr. Volpe says he takes extra time to ensure that patients and their families understand the disorder and potential ways of treating it.

“I want my patients and their families to know that we always do our best to help them navigate the difficult diagnosis of dementia and keep up with research to help treat these conditions,” he says.

He is assistant professor of neurology at Yale School of Medicine.
