Glaucoma: What You Need To Know

This information is useful for adults

If you have a family history of glaucoma, you need to visit an ophthalmologist regularly. Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness in the United States. Patients may not notice any symptoms in the early stages of the disease, but an ophthalmologist can detect it with the help of an examination and a noninvasive visual field test. If the disease is diagnosed, there are treatments available to prevent it from progressing, says Ji Liu, MD, a glaucoma specialist and assistant professor of ophthalmology at Yale School of Medicine.
